It is always exciting to see fresh new talented designers at LFW and this season was no exception, with the sharp eye of Lulu Kenedy spotting Marqueis’Almeida and Maarten Van der Horst at this years graduate MA show at Central Saint Martins, both were newbies this season alongside James Long (who I just adore his clothing)
First up was the Portuguese duo Marques’Almeida, who continued the grungy denim look of their graduate show, though changed to pale denim capes and cover-ups were layered over heavily slashed jeans, all with frayed and distressed edges, personally it wasn't my taste and I'm not sure how wearable the collection was for the everyday women?
Though as soon as I had started to think those thoughts the lovely S/S '12 collection by James Long came down the runway and it even seemed that this collection was a bit more polished? He focussed his prints on a snakeskin print tops and sweaters teamed with skin-tight skinny trousers. Sheer black blouses and baby doll dresses came with collars and plackets heavily encrusted with colourful gems that took my breath away! Such a beautiful collection.. I just wish there had been more of it!
Lastly Maarten Van Der Horst (an other newbie) used bold, strongly coloured printed cottons within his collection and showed neatly tailored shirts and shorts, with chic but slightly mannish sleeveless jackets. There were hints of coloured tulle around the busts as well as grey and cream printed pieces piped with neon. I did really love the use of apricot, parma violet and mint green denim ensembles to end with.
